Helping Others Can Start in Your Community

Oct 6th, 2011 Anthony Corrano

You drive down the street, and pass a dirty-looking old man on the sidewalk, holding a sign. "Homeless," it reads, and you wonder how he got that way. Christmas rolls around again, and you get people knocking on your door, asking for small donations of food or clothing to go towards someone in need who may live locally. Can it really be true? Are there really men, women, and children out there who are as bad off as you see in the movies? The sad truth is that yes, hunger and homelessness really does exist - and in the lives of people who live very near to you. However, the great truth of it all is that you, as simple and as busy as you are, can make a huge difference in the lives of these people.

Children and families all over America live every day, wondering what the next day will bring. Parents worry about finding enough food to feed their children, and a full 1 in 50 of America's children are without a home. Food, shelter, clothing, transportation, and other needs, are on the list of things they don't enjoy everyday. So many of these things can be provided by people like you and me, without much sacrifice.

By donating to these causes, through a number of organizations all over the country, you are eligible to deduct it from your taxes. Everything you give directly supports the children and families who need it the most. For those willing to donate an unwanted vehicle, a crew will even come to your home within 24 hours, and pick it up for you. There is no cost to you at all.

You can also choose to sponsor a specific child. The child's information can be shared with you, and you will be rewarded with having the face of an actual person to keep in mind as you help to provide for someone in need. These children can have a bright future, if you choose to help make it for them.

Helping someone you don't know brings a great sense of inner satisfaction that is rarely found in any other way. By donating money or food, or even just your time, you will be working together with other good people like yourself, to really make a difference in this world. There are so many benefits to helping someone, that it becomes difficult to explain all of them in words. As a wise man once said, some things that are counted don't count, but some things that count can't be counted.
